251 is 1 of the most used and common used cadences in Rock pop and jazz..
For those who don’t know what 251 stands for we are talking about a sequence of chords of this type:
2nd grade, 5th grade & 1st grade.

Example: Dmin7, G7, Cmaj7

We will talk about that from “a not jazzist” point of view.
We are on C major Key.

-         Which notes can we play in order to create some nice melodies without playing something “too much standard”?

We can have really different solutions about that and we can divide our improvisation in 2 different parts like this:

1 - We use arpeggios and triads.
2 – We play scales.

About the 1st that’s a good example that will help you guys a lot to create really cool melodies:

Point 1 - ARPEGGIOS

Dmin

-------4--------------4-------------------------
----5--------------------5----------------------

C maj 7

-------------------------------------------------
------------4--5--4-----------------------------
-----2---5-----------5---2---------------------

-------------------------------------------------

-----------3----7----3-------------------------
-------5----------------5-----------------------
----5-----------------------5-------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------

Point 2: Scales

Here we can really be creative (being carefull not to play wrong notes on the sequence of chords):

D min 7:

- C major scale (considering D min as 2nd grade on the C major scale)

- D min + min pentatonic scale (considering D minor as 6th grade on the F major scale)

-         F major scale (considering D min as 6th grade(eolian mode))

-         Bb major scale (considering D min as 3rd grade on that scale)

G7:

-         C major scale (G7 is 5th grade)

C maj 7:

-         C major scale
-         A min scale
-         A min pentatonic scale
-         A min blues pentatonic scale

That’s actually what I think sounds best on a 251 major sequence based obviousely on my experience of recording and composing during the years..
Give a chance to that suggestion and have fun ;.-)
Take care..

Home recording and composition Course

Let me introduce my new “Home recording and composition course”.

Of course the package is complete because first the student has to start with some guitar lessons to improve his technical and musical skills...

I will start this 1st course on 10th June 2009.

What is the difference between my course and the ones held in the typical guitars/music schools?

In the other schools usually the teacher teaches you how to improve technically, you study songs, you practice licks, etc. etc.

But nobody teaches you how to write a song and make your own demo or cd...

With my guide you’ll have all the tools to reach your target:

MAKE YOUR OWN CD ! ! !

Ok, now let me just go into the details about what we do along the way:

  • We arrange a student song or we build a song starting from an idea that the student has.
  • We arrange a song of another artist in the style of the student (i.e. make a reggae version of Metallica).
  • We make the recording using professional equipment.

What’s the target of this course?

The target is to have your cd ready in your hands (you can play and enjoy that in your car, send to a record label or to a club to have a date with your band or whatever...)

How many “Home recording” lessons do I need every month?

I suggest at least 5 hours of laboratory every couple of months, (if you work on the song on your own, that’s enough to work that out, at the same time we go on with the same guitar course).

I am really excited with this project and I'm looking foward to starting on 10th June.

I am sure that it will be a step foward for my students and for me. We all are looking foward to having good time!!!

Cheers.

Hey Buddies.. On line the 3rd part of my demo video.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCv-UuAELWM Check that out... The title of the song is "keep your eyes closed" from my solo Ep "Evolution" I made that video using the amazing head and cabinet "JSX PEAVEY" and The MORLEY Wha pedal BAD HORSIE II contour.. The drummer in that song is my friend Daniel Fasano now playing with the famous Italian band "dari", album out on EMI music.. The funny stuff is that he recorded that track a couple of hours before the audition for that band... ; - ) He's really young talented Drummer and we had a great vibe working together, we just had 2 hours rehearse and then we got into the studio to make the song.. Amazing.. Next week the Demo video part IV. Don't damn miss that... Stay tuned and have fun!! Dimitry
